The map in Horizon Forbidden West is absolutely huge. Reportedly, it’s approximately the same size – if not bigger than the map of Horizon Zero Dawn, which we believe is between 4.8 and 5.2 actual miles.
It’s fair to say that to go from one side to the other – be it for quests, to sell items, or purely for exploration purposes, it will take you some time – even if you aren’t doing it all on foot.
So, what’s the best and fastest way to get around? By fast traveling. The developers of Horizon Forbidden West – Guerrilla Games – have ensured plenty of different ways to move around the large map.
So, how do you fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West? Well, one of the ways is by using a campfire (there are many of those scattered around), but that is far from optimal. I’ve found that every time I need to go somewhere far, there isn’t a campfire nearby and I have to physically walk to it.
It’s a hassle, especially when I’m in a rush and need to move to a particular place quickly. As a result, my preferred way of fast traveling is the second option – by using the fast travel option from the menu.
However, to do that, you’ll need Fast Travel Packs. But where do you get fast travel packs from? In this short article, I’ll go over where to get fast travel packs easily so you can be on your way without having to look around for a campfire.
However, before we get into that, I want to share with you some key information you need to know in order to make the most out of your fast travel packs.
Important Information to Know When Using Fast Travel Packs
Using the fast travel packs is as easy as clicking the big square button in the middle of the controller, selecting a location, and pressing R2. Then, all you do is simply confirm and you’ll be on your way to your desired destination.
A single fast travel pack can take you from any point on the map to any point on the map. Now, there are a few exceptions where you can’t use the fast travel pack. These are when you’re trying to fast travel to an unexplored region despite it being on the map, any quest locations, regions that are populated by certain types of mobs, merchants, and other similar.
Now, you can use the fast travel packs to travel from anywhere on the map to a location that you’ve been to – such as Chainscrape, a campfire that you’ve discovered, and other random ruins (not all).
You can also use the fast travel pack to get out of dangerous situations. For example, if it gets way too heated and you’ve run out of healing herbs and potions and you want to get out before you get eliminated – you can simply pause and use your fast travel packs to escape to any location on the map.
How to Get Fast Travel Packs in Horizon Forbidden West
Now that you know where and when you can and can’t use the fast travel packs in Horizon Forbidden West, let me show you how you can get them.
Currently, there are two ways you can get fast travel packs. The first one is from merchants that sell them. On my way to following the Orb’s Path, which was during the Death’s Door main quest, I came across a merchant on the road.
He sold me 20 fast travel packs. He was the first merchant that I came across who sold them so I considered myself quite lucky considering I only had a single fast travel pack experience prior to meeting with him. Now, I use it everywhere I go.
You can find him located about halfway down the Orb’s Path (see map below for visual reference).
In order to get fast travel packs from the merchant though, you need to trade him some metal shards. A single fast travel pack costs 25 metal shards. If you don’t know where to find metal shards, just go around and kill machines. They will drop you some nearly all the time. Besides that, you can also find them in chests.
Despite me finding this merchant in the middle of nowhere, I’m sure you can find plenty of those in the bigger locations all over the map. So, do keep an eye out and keep all those metal shards safe until you find the right merchant.
How to Craft Fast Travel Packs
The second way you can get your hands on fast travel packs is by simply crafting them yourself. To do that, scroll through the different items you have using the d-pad, and hold the down button on the d-pad. Then, it will ask you if you want to craft fast travel packs.
To do that, simply hold X for as long as you need to and fast travel packs will start crafting. Do note that to craft fast travel packs, you’ll need 10 Ridge Wood and 3 Wild Meat per fast travel pack.
